This is the Social Security web site. http://www.ssa.gov/planners/about.htm You can get answers to your questions here and you can apply online at this site. You can apply 3 months in advance of your 62nd birthday. Actually, I'd say one month is plenty of time since my hubby applied three months before his 62nd birthday and they didn't process his application till a month in advance. You do not qualify for Medicare until you are 65 though. Currently, my hubby and I opted to not have any insurance, but I realize that many people do not want to take a chance like that.

You can sign up for social security benefits 3 months prior to your 62nd birthday. You will be sent a letter as to when you can expect your first check. It is typically 30 days after your 62nd birthday. You are not eligible until you are 65 and you can apply for that 3 months in advance also. You will be sent your medicare cards so you have them by your 65th birthday.

To GHami1953, Medicaid is a state run program and you would need to apply for that with your state social services department to see if you would be eligible. Medicaid is determined by income and assets. Each state has their own set of rules to determine eligibility. If you have been determined disabled you can collect social security disability prior to regular social security. Being considered qualified for this takes time and chances are you would be 62 and eligible to draw regular social security at that time anyway. Eligibility for medicare is otherwise age 65.
